Often known as a “Queen of Hills” Darjeeling is a natural hill resort situated at the north east of India. The name ‘Darjeeling’ came from the Tibetan words, ‘dorje’ meaning thunderbolt (originally the scepter of Indra) and ‘ling’ a place or land, hence it is also ‘the land of the thunderbolt’. Although most of the architecture around the area is influenced by the British, due to the colonization in 1835 by East India Co, visitors can see the original Tibetan influence in the some of the buildings and monasteries. Darjeeling also consists of world heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway where the century old miniature steam engine stills puffs its smoke along the winding mountainous tracks.
The tea gardens of Darjeeling provide the flavored Darjeeling tea admired all around the world. At 2,750 meters above sea level, Darjeeling has one of the highest tea gardens in the world. In this spectacular trip, we will also visit Pemayangtse Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist lamasery of the Nyingmapa Order and one of the oldest, Kicheopalri Lake which is scared to both Hindu’s and Buddhist’s alike.
